The Fast

Above is me, before my fast while I still worked at the job I hated. The picture demonstrates that even at 170 pounds, I still feel pretty good and I don't think I look so bad either. Before the fast I ate a lot and drank a fair amount in a very Mardi Gras type of preparation for giving something up.

I had the opportunity to begin my fast at my uncle in-law's cabin on a lake. It was beautiful the two days that I was there, sunny and warm. I spent some time lying out on their dock and taking in the sun, swimming here and there. My husband was with me and he helped me to stick to my fast (though he continued to cook deliciously smelling things for himself).

The fast was actually quite a bit easier than I had anticipated and though I felt weak by the end of it and had little energy I felt that it would be quite easy to tack another day on. I decided in the end to stick with two days. The most profound thing I realized from fasting is how often when food is around I am so used to just grabbing food that is around and eating it, without asking myself if I am even hungry. I found myself wanting to sneak food or give up, but these moments were fleeting and I was able to go a total of 59 hours without eating a single thing and drinking only water.

I weighed myself at the end of the two day fast and was amazed to discover that my weight had gone all the way down to 164.3. I had lost almost six pounds in two days, almost a third of the way to my goal already of losing 30 pounds. I knew that some of that would come back from beginning to eat again.

Now I embark on a very difficult diet indeed. Even with its difficulties, I cannot wait to eat, no matter what it is.
